Mahakala

Mahakala is Shiva as the Great Time, a powerful form associated with Ujjain and the transcendence of time and death, with traditions that emphasise time, mortality, protection, dissolution and liberation. Images of Mahakala are commonly recognised through linga or fierce Shiva form, trident and cremation-ground symbolism in some traditions. The name is also encountered as Mahakaleshwar.
