Bhudevi

Bhudevi is the Earth goddess in Hindu tradition, often represented as a consort of Vishnu and closely linked with the Varaha narrative, with traditions that emphasise earth, fertility, patience, sustenance and ecological sacredness. Images of Bhudevi are commonly recognised through lotus, green earth symbolism and Varaha/Vishnu imagery. The name is also encountered as Bhumi, Prithvi in overlapping but not identical usage. Some details change across sectarian, regional and temple traditions, which is important when writing an accurate overview. A useful treatment should separate mythology, theology and living practice: first outline the deity’s identity and principal narratives, then explain iconography and devotional significance, and finally note contemporary worship, festivals, temples and household customs where they are genuinely relevant.
