Jagannath

Jagannath is the Lord of the Universe worshipped at Puri, most often understood within Vaishnava traditions and closely linked with Krishna, with traditions that emphasise devotion, pilgrimage, inclusivity, sacred food and the Rath Yatra tradition. Images of Jagannath are commonly recognised through large round eyes, stylised wooden form and chariot festival. The name is also encountered as Jagannatha. Some details change across sectarian, regional and temple traditions, which is important when writing an accurate overview. A useful treatment should separate mythology, theology and living practice: first outline the deity’s identity and principal narratives, then explain iconography and devotional significance, and finally note contemporary worship, festivals, temples and household customs where they are genuinely relevant.
