Jihwa nirlekhana, scraping the tongue, appears among the morning steps of dinacharya in Ayurvedic texts, and plenty of Indian grandparents never skipped it. Tongue cleaners today are mostly U-shaped metal strips held at both ends.

Copper and brass versions carry the traditional look and develop a darker patina over time, while stainless steel stays bright and needs the least care. Look for a strip that bends slightly without kinking, with smooth, rolled edges and comfortable ends. Width matters too, as a wider strip covers more of the tongue in one pass.

Use gentle strokes from back to front a few times, rinsing the scraper in between, and never press hard. Wash it with soap after each use, polish copper or brass with lemon and salt now and then, and dry it before putting it away. Replace it if the edges roughen or bend, and if your mouth feels sore, stop and check with a dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I scrape before or after brushing?
Both orders are common. Tongue scraping is traditionally done in the morning, so pick a sequence that suits you and stick with it.
Why has my copper scraper turned dark?
Copper reacts with air and moisture to form a dull layer, and lemon with salt brings the shine back.
How long does a tongue cleaner last?
A metal scraper can last years if kept clean and dry; replace it once the edges roughen or it loses shape.
Is steel as suitable as copper?
Steel is easier to maintain, while copper is the traditional choice. Pick the one you will actually clean regularly.
