A jar of loose powder is not the easiest thing to carry to the office or on a train. That practical problem is a big reason Ayurvedic tablets and capsules are so common: the same herbs, pressed into a tablet or filled into a shell, in a measured unit.
Products here split into two clear groups. Single-herb tablets and capsules hold one plant, often a herb with a bitter or strong taste such as neem, or a familiar one like tulsi. Multi-herb formulations combine several ingredients, either to a classical recipe such as a vati or guggulu preparation, or to the maker's own formula.
A tablet usually contains binders as well as herbs, and a capsule shell may be gelatin or plant cellulose, so vegetarians should look for the shell type and the green or brown mark.
Each pack should list ingredients and their quantity per unit, the manufacturer's name and licence number, batch, manufacturing date and expiry. Directions come from the maker, but whether you should take a product at all is a decision to make with a qualified Ayurvedic doctor, more so if you are on other medicines.
Keep strips and bottles closed and away from humid bathrooms, out of children's reach, and set aside any tablets that have crumbled or changed colour.
