Classical Ayurveda uses far more forms than a jam or a fermented liquid. Approved classical preparations in this section cover the rest: herbal ghee known as ghrita, concentrated decoctions called kwath or kashaya, pills called vati or gutika, and paka preparations cooked with sugar.

Each form handles herbs in its own way. A ghrita cooks them into clarified butter, a kwath is a liquid or granulated decoction, and a vati packs powdered ingredients into a small pill. Because the forms differ so much, directions for one product tell you nothing about another, even when the herbs overlap.

Approved here means the item should come from a manufacturer licensed for Ayurvedic medicines, with that licence number printed alongside the classical name, composition, batch and expiry. Leave the question of whether any of these suits you to a qualified Ayurvedic doctor, and store each one as its label directs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ghrita?
A ghrita is a classical preparation in which herbs are cooked into ghee, so it looks and smells like ghee with an herbal note.
What is a kwath?
Kwath, also called kashaya, is a decoction of herbs. Packaged versions come as liquids, granules or tablets made from the decoction.
Why is this section labelled approved?
It holds classical products from licensed Ayurvedic manufacturers, so check that the licence number and other required details are on the pack.
Can I store a ghrita like ordinary ghee?
Follow the storage directions on the label; generally keep it closed, dry and away from heat, and scoop with a clean spoon.
