A good number of people buy loose gemstones because their astrologer has named a stone and a weight, and the family jeweller will do the rest. Buying the stone unset lets you see it from every side, check the report, and decide on gold, silver or panchdhatu later.

In Jyotish the nine navratna stones are linked with the grahas: ruby with the Sun, pearl with the Moon, red coral with Mars, emerald with Mercury, yellow sapphire with Jupiter, diamond with Venus, blue sapphire with Saturn, hessonite with Rahu and cat's eye with Ketu. Upratna, or substitute stones, such as garnet or citrine, are chosen by some instead. Weight is quoted in carats, and in many Indian homes also in ratti.

Colour, clarity, cut and any treatment all affect a stone. Ask for a report from a recognised gem laboratory for loose gemstones and match the weight and measurements. Wrap each stone separately in soft paper or a pouch so harder stones do not scratch softer ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ratti?
Ratti is a traditional Indian unit of weight for gemstones, still used by many astrologers. Conversions to carats vary slightly, so confirm with your jeweller.
What are upratna stones?
Upratna are substitute stones, such as garnet for ruby or citrine for yellow sapphire, which some people choose based on astrological advice.
How do I know if a gemstone is treated?
Heating, filling and dyeing are common treatments. A report from a recognised gem lab should state whether any treatment was detected.
How should loose stones be stored?
Keep each one in its own pouch or folded paper, since harder stones like sapphire can scratch softer ones like pearl or coral.
