Summer lunches in many homes end with a round of chaas poured from a jug, a fresh glass for everyone. Water jugs keep the table supplied so nobody has to get up mid-meal.

A capacity of one to one and a half litres covers four glasses with a refill to spare. A lid keeps out dust and flies on the table, and an ice guard behind the spout stops cubes tumbling into the glass. Check that the handle leaves room for your knuckles when the jug is full.

Steel jugs are sturdy and keep chilled drinks cool a little longer, glass shows off a pink sherbet or a mint-flecked lemonade, and slim jugs fit fridge doors.

Wash water jugs after each use, especially when they have held milk-based drinks, and dry them upside down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size jug suits a family of four?
A jug of about 1 to 1.5 litres pours four glasses with a little left for refills. Larger families or those serving guests often keep a 2 litre jug as well.
Is a lid necessary on a water jug?
A lid keeps out dust and insects, especially on an open dining table or in summer. Open jugs are fine for drinks poured and finished straight away.
Can steel jugs hold lemonade or sherbet?
Food-grade stainless steel is fine for lemonade and sherbets for normal serving times. Wash it soon after so nothing sits in it for hours.
How do I clean a narrow-necked jug?
Use a long bottle brush, or swirl a mix of rice grains, salt and a little water inside before rinsing. Leave it upside down to dry completely.
