Champi on a Saturday night, oil warmed in a steel katori and pressed into the scalp with fingertips, is how many of us first met Ayurvedic hair oils. The oil sits overnight, and the next morning's hair wash completes the ritual.

These oils usually start with coconut, sesame or almond oil, cooked or infused with herbs that have long been traditionally used in hair care, such as bhringraj, amla, brahmi, neem, hibiscus and methi. Some are classical preparations with Sanskrit names like Bhringraj taila, while others are a maker's own blend with added fragrance.

Look at the label for the base oil, the herb list, any mineral oil or perfume, the manufacturer and expiry. Patch-test a small area if the oil is new to you, and if your scalp tends to react, a skin doctor or Ayurvedic vaidya can advise you. Close the bottle tightly and keep it out of direct sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should hair oil be warmed?
Many families warm it slightly for comfort. Set the closed bottle in a mug of hot water for a minute and feel a drop on the back of your hand.
How long should oil stay in my hair?
Some people oil an hour before washing and others overnight; choose what feels comfortable and rinse off if your scalp itches.
Why has my coconut-based oil turned solid?
Coconut oil solidifies below about 24 degrees Celsius, so it turns white and firm in cold months. Warm the bottle gently to melt it.
How do I wash out heavy oil?
Apply a mild cleanser or a soaked reetha-shikakai mix before wetting your hair fully, then rinse well.
