Long before shampoo sachets reached every corner shop, a pot of reetha and shikakai soaked overnight was how many grandmothers washed their hair. Herbal hair cleansing powders keep that method going without the bother of boiling pods at home.

Reetha, the soapnut, and shikakai pods both contain saponins, which foam lightly in water. Amla powder is often added for its sour, softening feel, and mixes may also include hibiscus, methi or bhringraj. Single powders let you set your own ratio, while ready mixes save effort.

To use, stir the powder into warm water to make a thin paste, apply on wet hair, massage gently and rinse thoroughly; the foam is much lighter than shampoo, and that is normal. Keep it out of the eyes, where it stings. Check the ingredient list and packer details, patch-test if your scalp is sensitive, and store the powder in a dry, closed jar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't the powder foam much?
Plant saponins give only a light foam compared with shampoo, but the paste still lifts oil when massaged and rinsed properly.
Can I make a liquid wash from the powder?
Yes, simmer a spoonful in water for a few minutes, cool, strain and use the liquid the same day.
Will these powders leave grit in my hair?
Fine particles can remain if rinsing is brief. Rinse longer, or strain the paste through a thin cloth before applying.
Can I combine these powders with hair oiling?
Many people oil the night before and wash with the powder the next morning, so the two are often used together.
