A week before Ganesh Chaturthi, living rooms across Maharashtra start rearranging furniture to make room for the makhar, the decorated setting where the idol will sit. A puja backdrop plays that role in smaller homes, giving the shrine a defined, festive frame.

Cloths come first. Red and yellow are customary colours for covering a chowki in many traditions, often with a zari or gota border, and a smaller square serves as an aasan beneath a murti. Backdrop panels range from simple fabric drapes to printed or embroidered hangings and stand-mounted frames for larger setups.

Pick a backdrop a little wider than the chowki so the edges do not show. Iron cloths before festivals, keep them clear of diya flames and wash them gently in cold water. Fold the puja backdrop with tissue between layers if it has zari work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which colour cloth is used on a puja chowki?
Red and yellow are the most common choices in many traditions, with red often associated with goddess pujas and yellow with many Vishnu pujas. Families also follow their own customs.
What size backdrop suits a home puja?
Choose one a few inches wider and taller than your chowki and murti so the setup is fully framed. For a 12 to 18 inch chowki, a backdrop of 2 to 3 feet usually works.
How do I wash cloths with zari or gota work?
Hand wash gently in cold water with mild soap, do not wring, and dry in shade. Iron on the reverse side with a cloth in between.
Is it safe to use fabric backdrops near diyas?
Keep the flame at a safe distance and never leave lamps burning unattended near fabric. An LED diya is a sensible option for close setups.
