In Kerala and other parts of South India, the urli began as a broad, shallow cooking vessel before it moved to the front of the house. Today a decorative urli filled with water and floating flowers is one of the simplest ways to welcome guests.
Width matters more than depth. A bowl of 12 to 18 inches suits a side table or foyer, while larger ones work in courtyards and lobbies. Traditional urlis are usually metal, and you will also find stone, ceramic and painted versions; whichever you choose, check that it holds water without seeping and stands flat.
Arrange marigold heads, rose petals or jasmine with a few floating candles, and change the water daily so it stays clear and does not attract mosquitoes. Dry the decorative urli fully before putting it away, especially if it is metal.
