Look closely at a Shri Yantra and the eye is drawn inward through nine interlocking triangles to a single central point, the bindu. Sacred yantras work this way, as geometric maps of a deity used to steady the mind in worship and meditation.

Each has its own pattern and associations in belief. The Shri Yantra is linked with Devi as Tripura Sundari and with Lakshmi, the Kuber Yantra with the guardian of wealth, the Mahamrityunjaya with Shiva, and the Navgraha Yantra with the nine planets. Flat engraved plates are most common, while the three-dimensional Meru form of the Shri Yantra is kept on a stand. Pocket and wallet versions are printed or etched on thin sheets.

Many devotees have sacred yantras installed with a mantra by a priest before placing them in the shrine. Keep the plate upright or flat on a clean cloth, offer kumkum and flowers as your tradition guides, and clean copper with a soft cloth so the fine lines stay sharp.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Meru Shri Yantra?
It is a three-dimensional, pyramid-like form of the Shri Yantra, usually cast in brass, copper or crystal, kept on a stand in the shrine.
Does a yantra need to be energised?
Many families have a priest perform prana pratishtha with mantras before placing a yantra. Practices differ, so follow your own tradition.
Which yantra should I choose?
People usually pick one linked with the deity they worship or on the advice of a priest or astrologer. Each yantra is tied to a particular form of the divine.
How should I clean an engraved yantra?
Wipe it with a soft cloth; for tarnished copper, use a mild lemon or tamarind paste lightly and rinse, taking care not to wear down the engraving.
