Ask an astrologer about a stone and the next sentence is usually about a finger. In Jyotish practice, gemstone rings are worn on a specific finger linked with the graha: yellow sapphire on the index finger, blue sapphire on the middle, ruby and coral on the ring finger, and emerald on the little finger, mostly on the right hand.

The metal is often chosen with the stone too, gold for pukhraj and ruby, silver for pearl and many others, and panchdhatu or ashtadhatu in some traditions. Like pendants, many rings are made with an open back so the stone touches the skin. Some people begin wearing the ring on a particular weekday and time suggested by their astrologer.

Before ordering gemstone rings, check your ring size at a jeweller, ask for the stone weight and lab report, and see that the setting holds the stone firmly. Remove the ring before heavy work, soap and lotions, and clean it gently with a soft brush and lukewarm water.

Frequently Asked Questions

On which finger is each gemstone worn?
By common Jyotish practice, yellow sapphire goes on the index finger, blue sapphire on the middle, ruby and coral on the ring finger, and emerald on the little finger. Your astrologer may advise differently.
Should the stone touch the skin?
Traditionally yes, so many gemstone rings have an open back beneath the stone.
How do I find my ring size?
The simplest way is to have your finger measured by a local jeweller, or compare with a ring that already fits that finger well.
How should I clean a gemstone ring?
Use lukewarm water and a soft brush, then dry it with a cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, especially on soft or porous stones like pearl and coral.
