Sunlight passing through a string of clear beads makes small rainbows on the wall of the puja room. Sphatik malas are made from quartz crystal, and their cool, glassy beads have long been used in the worship of Shiva, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Durga.

Beads may be polished round or cut with facets that catch the light. A full 108 bead japa mala is used for mantras, while shorter strings and combinations with rudraksha are worn around the neck or wrist. Natural sphatik feels cold to the touch and is fairly heavy for its size, and tiny inclusions or cloudy wisps are normal in quartz.

Glass imitations look very similar, so ask for the material details and, for pricier pieces, an identification report before buying sphatik malas. Crystal can chip if knocked against hard surfaces; store it in a soft pouch apart from metal jewellery, and rinse it in plain water and dry with a cloth to bring back the shine.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Which deities is a sphatik mala used for?
It is traditionally used in the worship of Shiva, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Durga, and for many general mantras.
How can I tell sphatik from glass?
Quartz feels cool and stays cool longer in the hand, and often shows tiny natural inclusions. A lab report is the reliable way to confirm it.
Are faceted beads better than smooth ones?
Neither is better; it is a matter of feel. Smooth beads glide easily during japa, while faceted beads sparkle more as jewellery.
How should I clean a crystal mala?
Rinse it in plain water and dry it with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners, and keep it from knocking against hard objects.
