On a Shravan Monday the quietest sound in a Shiva home is water trickling over stone. Shivlings are the aniconic form of Mahadev, worshipped with water, milk, bel patra and bhasma rather than dressed like a murti.

The most prized are Narmadeshwar banalingas, smooth egg-shaped stones from the Narmada riverbed with natural markings. Clear sphatik, white marble, black stone and brass are also widely used, and many come seated on a jalahari, the yoni base with a spout that carries away abhishek water. For homes, most families prefer a small Shivling, often around the size of a thumb, while larger ones suit temples.

When placing one, keep the spout of the base pointing north, as is the custom, and set a lota or abhishek patra nearby. Wipe Shivlings dry after abhishek so water does not collect under the base, and change the bel patra daily.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What size Shivling is suitable for home worship?
Many traditions suggest keeping a small Shivling at home, often no bigger than a thumb, while larger lingas are for temples. Ask your priest if unsure.
Which direction should the jalahari spout face?
Customarily the spout points north so that abhishek water flows out on that side.
What is a Narmadeshwar Shivling?
It is a naturally shaped stone from the Narmada river, also called banalinga, worshipped as Shiva without carving.
What should be offered during abhishek?
Water, milk, curd, honey, ghee and gangajal are common, followed by bel patra, flowers and sandal paste. Family customs differ on the order.
