Lepa, a herbal paste spread on the skin and left to dry, is one of the oldest forms described in Ayurvedic texts. Approved external preparations in this section bring together such forms and their packaged cousins, from lepa powders you mix with water to ready creams, gels and liniments.

What ties them together is that each is meant for outer use and comes from a manufacturer licensed for Ayurvedic products. The pack should show the licence number, composition, directions, manufacturer's details, batch and expiry, along with cautions such as keeping it clear of the eyes.

Formulas vary a great deal, so try a little on a small patch of skin and wait to see how it responds. Ask a qualified Ayurvedic doctor which preparation suits you, and avoid broken skin unless the label and your practitioner say otherwise.

Close tubes and jars after use, and keep lepa powders as dry as any other herbal powder.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What is a lepa?
A lepa is a herbal paste applied on the skin in a layer, traditionally mixed fresh from powder with water, rose water or another liquid.
How is a liniment different from an oil?
Liniments are usually thinner liquid rubs, often with spirit or aromatic oils, while tailas are herbs cooked into an oil base.
Why does this section mention licences?
External Ayurvedic products are regulated too, so the licence number and maker's details should appear on the pack for you to confirm.
Can I keep leftover lepa paste?
Mix only what one application needs; a mixed paste spoils quickly, so discard any leftover.
