Turn a rudraksha in your fingers and you will see grooves running from top to bottom. Each groove is a mukhi, or face, and individual rudraksha beads are sold by that count, most commonly from one to fourteen. Five mukhi is the most familiar and easily found; higher counts and the rare one mukhi are much harder to come by.

Traditional texts link each mukhi with a deity or graha, and many devotees choose a bead on that basis or on a guru's or astrologer's advice. People wear a single bead on red or black thread, cap it in silver to hang from a chain, or place it in the puja room. Size and the crispness of the mukhi lines vary from seed to seed.

Since mukhis can be faked by carving, ask for an identification or X-ray report for higher-value individual rudraksha beads and check that it matches. Keep the bead dry, wipe off sweat after wearing, and oil it lightly now and then if your tradition allows.
