Grandparents often give a small silver Om or Ganesha locket at a child's naming ceremony or first day of school, and many of us still wear one. Devotional pendants are these small images of faith, meant to be worn close to the body rather than kept in the shrine.

Designs follow the deity or symbol. Om and Swastik are the most common, followed by Ganesha, Hanuman, Shiva with trishul and damru, Krishna with his flute, Durga and Sai Baba. Some pendants enclose a tiny rudraksha or a mantra engraving, and the Hanuman Chalisa is printed on some lockets in very small type. Metals include sterling silver, brass, panchdhatu, copper and gold-plated alloys.

Children's devotional pendants should be small and lightweight with rounded edges, on a sturdy thread or chain. Clean silver with a soft cloth to remove tarnish, keep plated pendants dry so the finish lasts, and remove the chain before sleeping if it tends to twist.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Which metal suits a devotional pendant for daily wear?
Sterling silver and panchdhatu are popular for everyday wear. Gold-plated pieces look bright but need more care to keep the plating intact.
Is it fine to give a deity pendant to a child?
Many families do, especially at naming or birthday ceremonies. Choose a light piece with smooth edges and a secure chain or thread.
How do I clean a tarnished silver locket?
Rub it gently with a silver polishing cloth, or use a mild paste of baking soda and water, then rinse and dry.
Should a deity pendant be removed at certain times?
Some people remove it before sleeping, bathing or visiting places they consider unclean, while others wear it continuously. Follow your family custom.
