Start with the question every shopkeeper asks: which bhagwan, and for which corner? Deity idols differ widely, and the answer decides the material, posture and size. A Laddu Gopal for daily seva, a seated Lakshmi-Ganesh pair for Diwali, a standing Hanuman for the entrance or a Durga murti on her lion all bring their own traditions.

Brass and panchdhatu murtis are heavy, last for generations and can be bathed during abhishek. White Makrana-style marble pieces are painted in fine detail and suit larger mandirs, while black stone is common in South Indian worship. Wood and resin are light enough for a wall shelf or car dashboard. Look at the face, the hands and mudras, and how evenly the base sits.

Many families keep deity idols facing east or west and avoid placing them directly on the floor. Bathe metal idols with water or milk and dry them with a soft cloth, wipe painted ones without water, and dress them in seasonal vastra if your custom includes shringar.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Which direction should an idol face at home?
Many households place idols so that the devotee faces east or north while praying, but customs vary. Your priest can advise according to your home's layout.
Can I keep two idols of the same deity?
Many families avoid keeping duplicate idols of the same deity facing each other in the shrine. Ask an elder or priest if you are unsure.
How do I clean a painted marble idol?
Dust it with a soft brush and wipe with a slightly damp cloth, avoiding soaking, so the paint does not fade or peel.
