Grandmothers used to sit after lunch rolling cotton between their palms, making a week's worth of wicks in one sitting. Today cotton wicks and ghee battis come ready, but the shapes are the same ones families have always used.

The round phool batti, flat at the base and pointed at the top, stands upright in a diya and is common for aarti. The long lambi batti lies along the lamp and suits oil diyas and deepak stands. Ghee battis are pre-dipped in ghee and set, so you only place one in the lamp and light it, which saves mess on busy mornings. Thicker akhand jyoti wicks are meant to burn for long hours during Navratri.

Choose cotton wicks and ghee battis to match your lamp and fuel. Ghee wants a soft, tightly rolled batti, while mustard or til oil pairs well with longer wicks. Keep ghee battis in a cool, closed box during summer so they do not soften, and trim a charred tip before relighting.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Which wick should I use for aarti?
The round phool batti is the usual choice for aarti diyas and plates. For a deepak with a long spout or oil lamp, a lambi batti works better.
What is an akhand jyoti wick?
It is a thicker, longer wick made to keep a lamp burning continuously, as many families do during Navratri. It still needs regular refilling of ghee or oil.
Why do ghee battis melt in summer?
Ghee softens in heat, so pre-dipped wicks can stick together. Store them in a cool place in a closed container.
My wick keeps going out. What can I do?
Make sure the wick is soaked with fuel before lighting and that its tip is not charred. Trim the black end and keep enough ghee or oil in the lamp.
