Almost every Indian handbag or bedside drawer seems to hold a small tin of balm. The smell alone, sharp camphor and cool menthol, brings back overnight train journeys and late exam nights for many of us.

Herbal balms are thick, wax-based rubs carrying aromatic ingredients such as camphor, pudina satva, eucalyptus oil, wintergreen oil, clove oil or ajwain satva. They come as firmer white balms or softer red ones, and people use a small dab on the temples, neck, back or shoulders as part of a traditional self-care habit. They are for outer application only.

Strong aromatics can sting, so keep balms away from the eyes, nostrils and broken skin, wash your hands after use, and store tins well out of reach of small children. Read the ingredients, caution lines, manufacturer and licence details on the pack, and ask a doctor or qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before using a balm on a young child or if your skin reacts easily.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What is the difference between white and red balms?
They differ mainly in texture, colour and the mix of aromatic oils, and the ingredient list shows exactly what each contains.
Can a balm melt in summer?
Wax-based balms soften in heat. Keep the tin closed in a cool place and it will firm up again.
How much balm should I use?
A very small dab is usually enough; follow the pack directions and stop if the skin feels hot or itchy.
Is camphor balm suitable for babies?
Strong camphor and menthol products are often labelled unsuitable for young children, so read the label and ask a doctor before using one on a child.
