Measure first, then shop. Wall decor looks right when it covers roughly two-thirds of the width of the furniture beneath it, and when its centre sits close to eye level, around five feet from the floor in most homes.
Indian walls have a long history of decoration, from painted village homes to carved wooden panels in old havelis, and many pieces today borrow from styles such as Madhubani, Warli and Gond painting. Mirrors with decorative frames brighten narrow hallways, and metal or wooden hangings add depth on plain painted walls.
Group smaller frames on paper templates taped to the wall before drilling, so you can adjust the spacing. In rented homes, look for light pieces that hang on adhesive hooks. Avoid walls that take seepage in the monsoon, and dust wall decor regularly so a film of kitchen grease or city dust does not settle on it.
