Filter coffee in a South Indian kitchen is poured back and forth between a tumbler and a wide davara until it froths. That one ritual explains what makes good drinking tumblers: a rim that pours cleanly, sides that are comfortable to hold when the drink is hot, and a base that stands firm.

Height matters. Short tumblers of about 200 ml suit water and coffee, taller ones take a full glass of lassi or nimbu pani. Steel is the everyday favourite because it does not crack, while glass lets you see the colour of a sherbet and is easy to check for cleanliness.

Stacking tumblers save shelf space, though a slightly flared rim stops them jamming together. Wash steel drinking tumblers with ordinary dish soap and dry them upside down to avoid water spots.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What is a davara tumbler set?
It is the South Indian pairing of a tall tumbler and a wide, shallow bowl called a davara or dabarah. Coffee is poured between them to cool and froth it before drinking.
Why do steel tumblers get water spots?
Spots come from minerals in hard water that remain after drying. Drying them with a cloth, or rinsing with a little vinegar water now and then, keeps them shiny.
Which tumbler size suits children?
A small tumbler of 150 to 200 ml is easy for little hands and limits spills. Steel or other unbreakable materials are the practical choice for them.
Can I serve hot drinks in steel tumblers?
Yes, but the outside heats up quickly. Double-walled tumblers, or holding the rim as many coffee drinkers do, makes them comfortable.
