Turmeric is the natural enemy of table linen, and anyone who has served dal on a white tablecloth knows it. That is why many homes keep two kinds: a sturdy, washable cover or set of placemats for daily meals, and a nicer cloth or runner for festivals and guests.
To size a tablecloth, measure the table and add 8 to 12 inches on each side for the drop. Runners should be about a third of the table's width and can hang slightly over the ends. Cotton is easy to wash and iron, and printed or darker fabrics hide small stains better than plain light ones.
Treat spills quickly: blot curry stains, rinse in cold water and rub in a little dish soap before washing. Iron table linen while it is slightly damp for crisp folds, and store it rolled rather than folded to avoid hard creases.
