When guests arrive, the first thing out of the kitchen is usually a tray: water glasses first, then chai and biscuits a few minutes later. Serving trays carry the hospitality of an Indian home from room to room.

Handles are the main thing to check. Side handles help you hold a heavy load of glasses steadily, while a flat tray without handles sits well on a table or under a centrepiece. A raised rim stops cups sliding as you turn a corner.

Wood, steel, enamelled metal and lacquer each give a different feel. Coated surfaces wipe clean after a sherbet spill, whereas plain wood should be dried straight away. At Diwali and weddings, decorated serving trays are also used to present gifts and shagun.

Store them upright in a slot, or flat at the bottom of a cupboard, so nothing heavy bends the base.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What size tray do I need for six cups of tea?
A tray roughly 16 to 18 inches long holds six cups and saucers comfortably. Allow a few more inches if a plate of snacks is going on it too.
Are wooden trays safe for food?
Yes, provided the finish is food-safe. Wipe them rather than soaking them, and avoid setting very hot vessels directly on the wood.
Can a tray be used to present wedding or festival gifts?
Many families use decorated trays to present sweets, dry fruit or clothes at weddings and festivals. A flat tray with a low rim suits this well.
How do I clean a lacquered or painted tray?
Wipe it with a soft damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry it. Scrubbing or soaking can lift the paint.
