The sound of "swaha" and the smell of ghee meeting dry wood are what most people remember from a havan. Havan kits collect the material that goes into the fire: loose havan samagri, which is a mix of dried herbs, grains, seeds and resins, along with mango or other samidha sticks, cow-dung cakes, camphor to start the flame and small items such as jau, til and gur.
A havan may be done on its own, on Navratri ashtami, at a birthday, during a griha pravesh or at the close of a katha. Smaller kits suit a short family havan in a balcony kund; larger ones are for a full ceremony that a pandit leads.
Most havan kits state how many people or ahutis they suit. Keep it sealed in a dry cupboard, as samagri absorbs moisture and then smokes heavily. Light the fire only in a ventilated space, use a proper metal or brick kund, and keep water nearby while the flames are high.
