Rings are not for everyone; some people work with their hands, some find a ring uncomfortable, and some simply prefer a stone near the heart. Gemstone pendants answer this by setting the stone in a locket worn on a chain or silk thread.

Many are made with an open back, leaving the gem in contact with the skin as traditional Jyotish practice prefers. Settings come in silver, gold and panchdhatu, plain or in a temple design, and navratna pendants arrange all nine stones in a fixed traditional order around a central ruby. Single-stone lockets are often bezel-set, which holds a soft stone like pearl or coral more securely than prongs.

When comparing gemstone pendants, ask for the stone's weight, the metal used and a lab report for the stone. Pick a bail wide enough for your chain, take the pendant off before swimming or using chemicals, and check the setting every few months for loosening.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Why do some pendants have an open back?
Jyotish tradition generally prefers that the stone touches the skin, so many pendants leave the back of the stone exposed.
What is the order of stones in a navratna pendant?
Traditionally ruby sits in the centre, with the other eight stones placed around it in a set arrangement linked to the grahas.
Is a pendant or a ring better for a gemstone?
Both are followed in practice. Some astrologers specify a ring on a particular finger, while others accept a pendant, so ask the person who advised you.
How do I keep the pendant in good shape?
Remove it before bathing with soap, swimming or cleaning, wipe it with a soft cloth, and have the setting checked if the stone feels loose.
