Long before shop-bought decorations, families strung fresh mango leaves and marigolds across the main door on festival mornings. A decorative toran keeps that custom alive, and many homes now leave one up all year as a sign of welcome.
Torans are called bandhanwar in the north and thoranam in the south, and styles follow regional craft. Gujarat and Rajasthan are known for embroidered and mirror-work torans, while beaded, felt and artificial flower versions are widely used for Diwali, griha pravesh and weddings. Fresh-leaf torans are traditionally replaced once they dry.
Measure the door frame width and choose a toran that covers it with a small drop, usually 6 to 12 inches. Use hooks or nails on either side rather than tape, which slips in humid weather. Shake a fabric decorative toran gently every few weeks and store it flat between festivals.
