The government blocked 26 social media platforms, citing non-compliance with local registration rules and rising concerns about misinformation and hate speech.

 

8 September 2025 – Gen-Z Protests Spark Nationwide Unrest

Thousands, led largely by students, rallied against the ban and corruption across Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and more. 

 

Protesters attempted to storm parliament, triggering a harsh police response with water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and eventually live fire. The clashes left at least 19 dead, mostly in Kathmandu, and over 200 injured."

 

8 September 2025 Evening – Home Minister Steps Down

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, accepting moral responsibility for the casualties caused during the crackdown.

 

8 September 2025 Late Night – Ban Revoked

Following an emergency cabinet meeting, the government decided to lift the social media ban.

 

9 September 2025 – Violence Escalates

Even after the bans reversal, unrest intensified. Protesters torched the homes of PM Oli, President Ramchandra Poudel, and key ministers.

 

Party offices, including the Nepali Congress HQ in Sanepa and the CPN–UML office in Lalitpur, were attacked. The army was deployed, and Tribhuvan International Airport was forced to shut down completely.

 

At 6 pm, PM Oli held an all-party meeting, appealing for calm and describing the crisis as an unpleasant situation caused by a gap between youth and government. Just hours later, he resigned
